Pipe marking standards aren't only defined by the ANSI/ASME but for other organizations as well. The International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration (IIAR) publishes specialized pipe marking standards that are used to mark ammonia refrigeration pipes. There are also special standards for labeling medical gases in hospitals and medical facilities.

What about special conditions?

  • For hard to label locations use DuraTags and/or Valve Tags
  • Label overhead pipes so labels are placed below he horizontal center line of the pipe
  • Label lower pipes so the label is placed above the horizontal center line of the pipe
  • Use Pipe Grabber™ Sleeves when pipes are too dirty and cannot be cleaned
  • Pipe Grabber™ Sleeves are also ideal when labels won't adhere to unusual textures

What is the importance of maintaining labels?

Properly maintained pipe markers to ensure their legibility and readability. Use abbreviations to maximize the space and convey the appropriate message. Under normal conditions labels will last five to seven years. Environmental conditions can impact label life.

The ANSI A13.1 code is the most commonly known code for pipe marking. However, it is not the only code. There are many other pipe marking applications and codes to cover them. In addition to labeling pipes, valves may also benefit from improved visual communication.
